On sky at the moment...

Amazing how much cricket has modernised to become more professional. As Butcher says after beating SA in 98 there was no time for most of the players to celebrate as such as they played for their counties the very next day. Imagine that happening now...back then players had even less days off and could go 20+ days solid playing with cup runs and reserve days etc.

At that time the change to 4 day cc was incremental them became the norm...With the Sunday League retained between days 3 and 4...to possibly play elsewhere. As Steve James said in his book at that time it's amazing to think that no one was killed from travelling fatigue.

Very interesting and balanced documentary and funny in places.

Thoughts please from the wise....

Prior to that of course with 3 day championship games, they could play Sat at one venue, a Sunday League game at another, back to the Saturday venue for the 2nd and 3rd day, and then go somewhere else for the next Championship game, Weds to Friday and then start again on Saturday.

Clearly this was mad, and no good for anyone, international or county player.

Indeed - following your side around the country now with more structure is still difficult...I'd love to see Glam's every move all summer and people did all over the country: can anyone share experiences as a supporter from those times?

In those days of 3-day cc sponsored cars and pleasing the fags/booze sponsors was de rigeur - who were/are a huge part of holding the county structure together.  Look at Tendulkar's unveiling at Yorkshire for example!

When we went away with England a few years back, David 'Syd' Lawrence was our tour host.

On hearing our accent, he said that he once finished a Test Match on a Tuesday at the Oval, and the next morning he was bowling for Gloucestershire at Agerbavenny (as he said it)

I remember feeling sorry for Mike Proctor in a John Player one Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford, he was bowling his heart out as usual facing a drive back down to Taunton or Bristol with the team having to make over 400 to avoid the follow on on Monday having been flogged around by Richards & Bothom on the Saturday.
The modern player don't know how lucky they are.
